HS Summer Reading

High School Summer Reading Directions: Students will read the assigned book(s) for their grade level and complete the summer reading guide for each book. Completed assignments should be brought back the first week of school in August.

Summer reading books may be purchased in the Cougar Store (available in store until May 30th and online anytime).

For English I (incoming 9th graders):

  • A Separate Peace by John Knowles

For English I Pre-AP (incoming 9th graders who have signed up for the advanced class):

  • A Separate Peace by John Knowles
    AND
  • Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

For English II (incoming 10th graders):

  • I am Malala: The Girl Who Stood up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban by Christina Lamb and Malala Yousafzai

For English II Pre-AP (incoming 10th graders who have signed up for the advanced class): 

  • A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
    AND
  • The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

For English III Academics and Honors (incoming 11th graders):

  • The Crucible by Arthur Miller

For English III AP Language and Composition (incoming 11th graders who have signed up for the AP course):

Complete the given questions for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (in place of the summer reading guide).

For English IV Academic and Honors (incoming 12th graders):

  • Beowulf: A New Verse Translation by Seamus Heaney (it must be this version)

For English IV AP Literature and Composition (incoming 12th graders who have signed up for the AP course):

Complete the summer reading guides for both novels. Read the poem and be ready to discuss it when school begins.
