Northland Debaters win National Championship!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to members of NCS Debate for being crowned national champions tonight as members of the East Texas District Worlds Team!

Kaitlyn England and Elyse Dewbre, along with team members Emily Grantham and Leila Saklou (Kingwood HS) and Shreya Joshi (The Woodlands) won the national tournament after defeating Team China in finals on an 8-3 decision.

The Northland Debate Team had a fantastic showing at NSDA Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (the largest academic competition in the nation). For the fourth time in program history, we had students competing for a National Championship!

Kaitlyn England (rising senior) and Elyse Dewbre (rising junior) are members of the East Texas District Team with two students from Kingwood High School (Leila Saklou and Emily Grantham) and one student from The Woodlands High School (Shreya Joshi). As a team, the girls made it to the final round for the second year in a row. In order to make it to the final round, they qualified for the tournament, won all six preliminary rounds and won five elimination rounds.

Northland has attended Nationals 12 years in a row; this year we had four qualifiers! In addition to Kaitlyn and Elyse, Athena Sarghos qualified in International Extemporaneous Speaking and Nathan Brown qualified in Humorous Interpretation. They were joined by the best speakers and debaters in the country to compete this week.
