The counseling and advising staff at Northland Christian School provides counseling,
academic advising, and college admission guidance to middle and high school students.
Counselors are available to help students with social/emotional issues, course
selection, scheduling and academic concerns and the complete college application
process.
Counselors begin working with students in middle school to ensure they are taking
appropriate courses to prepare them for high school. During middle school, students
should be taking classes and electives that develop their abilities and allow them to
explore various interests. In high school, the counseling staff assists students in
choosing the right courses for their next phase of life, preparing the way for college and
beyond. At NCS, students will receive the benefit of one-on-one attention working with
counselors to ensure graduation and college admission requirements are met. The
Counseling Center connects students to college fairs and admissions representatives,
test preparation, scholarships and more!
NCS will host numerous universities on campus each year where schools can show off
their specific universities, their unique features, and recruit our students!
The thought of college can be stressful, but the counselors at NCS are here to meet
your needs at your level. We are ready to help and guide you to a successful future!
Students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP exam. AP exam dates are determined by College Board and are typically administered in the first two weeks of May. Students are also responsible for the exam fee, which the College Board determines.
The SAT is administered on the scheduled College Board SAT School Day each October for 12th-grade students and each March for 11th-grade students. While the SAT School Day exam is optional, we highly encourage students to sign up for this administration, as it is the first time many students will take the test and also for the convenience of taking it on campus. Students who opt to take the test will be charged in their FACTS account for the exam cost, which the College Board determines. For information on taking the test, scoring information, scholarships, and recognition, students can sign in to their College Board accounts.
Pre-ACT (preliminary ACT) is administered each fall for 10th and 11th-grade students. For college and career planning resources, please visit the ACT.
Dual Credit classes allow students to earn concurrent high school and college credit. Therefore, due to the curricula and level of difficulty, Dual Credit courses receive an increase in grade points, reflected in the calculated GPA.
Enrollment in Dual Credit courses requires teacher recommendation. Placement in these courses is based on the entrance requirements for Lone Star College. Students must apply to Lone Star College before testing so that scores may be attached to the application. The application and testing procedures can be obtained in the Counselor’s Office. Student scores must meet Lone Star College standards on the TSI Assessment test unless exempt based on their PSAT, SAT, or ACT score.
Test scores must be approved and on file in the Counselor’s Office before May 25th of the application school year, or the student will not be enrolled in the course when the school year begins in August. An additional fee is required by Lone Star College and is the responsibility of the student.
Naviance is a web-based portfolio that helps plan and organize the student’s high school career and keep track of their post-secondary application process.
The path to career readiness begins with self-discovery. Naviance allows students to learn about their strengths and reflect on their interests. Assessments provide suggestions on how to apply personality traits and learning styles in class, in addition to helping students discover career options based on their interests and strengths. Armed with this information, students can plan courses to complement their career pathway.
